How do I use WIndows 2000 NT Backup Utility?

  1. Logon to your workstation or server and run NTBackup.exe or from the Start Menu select Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Backup. See Image 1

  1. Select the Backup tab. See Image 2
  2. Place a check box in the option to backup the C: disk or %systemdrive% and a check in the checkbox to backup the System State data. See Image 2
  3. From the Backup Destination drop-down box, select whether to backup your information to tape or a file. See Image 2
  4. In the “Backup media or file name” provide a label for the tape, or specify the name and location of the backup file you wish to create. If backing up your data to tape you would provide the label “Data Backup for MS Support”; if backing up your data to a file you would provide a path and filename “C:\databackup.bkf”. See Image 2

  1. Click Start Backup to backup your data; you will be prompted to provide additional backup job information. You can select the defaults provided, then click Start Backup. See Image 3

  1. You will then see the Backup Progress dialog box. See Image 4

  1. Once complete, you will have a dialog box stating that the backup is complete. Check the STATUS field to ensure it states the backup was completed. If any files were skipped ensure that no applications are running on the system and disable all non-essential services, then repeat the steps to create the backup. See Image 5

  1. If you backed up your system to a file, use a tool such as WinZip to compress the .BKF file.
