Troubleshooting Common MOM 2005 Problems

Error Message: The Windows Installer service is disabled.

Explanation: The Windows Installer service is typically disabled by a Group Policy Object (GPO) setting to prevent users from installing software on their computers. As a result, the MOM 2005 installation program fails if the Windows Installer service is disabled.

Solution: Enable the Windows Installer service via group policy that applies to the computer on which you are installing MOM. This may be a local or domain policy which is located here:

Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Installer -> Disable Windows Installer.

See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920215

Error Message: ASP.NET is not found.

Explanation: The MOM 2005 prerequisites utility reports an error indicating that ASP.NET is required for the MCF but is not enabled.

Solution: On computers running Windows 2000 install IIS 5.0 before you install the .NET Framework.

On computers running Windows Server 2003, click Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel, and then install ASP.NET.

See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920215

Error Message: SQL services are not configured correctly.

Explanation: The MOM 2005 prerequisites utility reports the above error message if the services SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) and SQL Server Agent (SQLSERVERAGENT) are not configure to startup automatically.

Solution: Configure SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) and SQL Server Agent (SQLSERVERAGENT) services to start automatically on boot.

See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920215

Error Message: Network COM+ is not installed.

Explanation: Network COM+ access enables remote access to the MOM Management Server. The prerequisites check fails if you have chosen to install the MOM Management Server but have not installed network COM+ access.

Solution: Enable Network COM+ access through Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.

See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920215

Error Message: MOM database connectivity fails.

Explanation: When installing MOM on a computer that is not connected to the network or that is in a workgroup, the Setup program rolls back if it cannot connect to the MOM database.
Ensure that the computer on which you are installing MOM can connect to the MOM database.

Solution: If the computer is in a workgroup, log on to the computer using an account that is a member of the local Administrators group.

Alternatively, flush the cached logon credentials by running the ipconfig/flushdns command.

Error Message: The MOMService account already exists.

Explanation: During installation, the MOM 2005 Setup program creates a group named MOMService. The Setup program fails if an account with the same name already exists in the domain.

Solution: Rename or remove the existing MOMService Account

Error Message: Installation of the Management Server stops unexpectedly.

Explanation: Look for the error message 1603 in the MOMServer.log, which is a generic failure of the Windows Installer. One such cause of this problem has been shown to be that the Default Web Site instance is no longer available (either because IIS has been removed or the Default Web Site has been deleted). The Default Web Site instance must be available to install the MOM Web Console successfully. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920215

Solution: Here are some steps to resolve this issue:

  1. Uninstall/reinstall IIS – This will recreate the Default Web Site instance and is the recommended method of doing so.
  2. Manually recreate the Default Web Site instance
  3. Navigate to IIS Services Manager and select the “Web Sites” node.
  4. Create a new Web Site (or modify an existing instance).
  5. Record the number in the Identifier column.
  6. Stop the IIS Services (net stop iisadmin /y)
  7. Edit the %systemroot%\system32\inetsvr\MetaBase.xml file (make a backup before modifying).
  8. Do a Find/Replace for the number you wrote down earlier and change it to 1.
  9. Save the file and restart your IIS Services.
