How do I solve the Windows Update error 0×80072EFD?

The Windows error message 0×80072EFD is fairly common on any of the existing Microsoft OS platforms (Windows 2000, 2003, XP, Vista). Before proceeding please test after each troubleshooting step to verify if the issue is resolved. Troubleshooting Windows Update error 80072EFD

  1. Test your network connection to Windows Update website by selecting this link: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v4/iuident.cab. If the relevant file download dialog box appears then your connection is fine. Any other result/error should prompt you to check you Internet connection.
  2. If you are using a Windows XP or Vista system, for example, check your local firewall settings to ensure that TCP port 443 is not block inbound or outbound. If you have any firewall programs such as ZoneAlarm installed check for the accessibility of the mentioned port as well. This step also applies to hardware firewalls.
  3. Verify that the following Windows Update sites are trusted by Internet Explorer: http://Windowsupdate.microsoft.com http://V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com https://v4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com http://Download.Windowsupdate.com http://V5.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com https://v5.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
  4. Try to flush you DNS by using the command ipconfig/flushdns at a CMD prompt.
  5. If you have configured your host file %systemroot%\system32\driver\etc ensure that the entry http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com does not exist. Type the # character before the line to comment it out and save the file. A reboot of the system at this time may be necessary for the change to take effect.

  1. My son got the Windows error message 80072EFD, couldn’t get on the internet, and kept getting this same error message. After 2 days of trying everything he could find on line, I asked him what exactly he had done just before he had this problem………He installed and ran anti-virus software NOD32.

    He unistalled NOD32 and you gessed it, the error and internet problem went away.
