A fatal error has occured and Cygwin will now exit. Please open XWin.log
I recently faced a annoying problem with the free application Cygwin version 2.5.
Every time a user ran startx in the application a fatal error appear:
“A fatal error has occured and Cygwin will now exit. Please open /tmp/XWin for more information.”
The actual error message within the Xwindows was:
$ startx

XWin was started with the following command line:
X :0 -multiwindow -clipboard
Fatal server error:

giving up.
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server

Troubleshooting Steps:
1. Ensure taht all relevant users have the permissions to write to the /tmp/XWin.log
2. Backup the /tmp/XWin.log and delete it
3. Attempt to run startx again.
