DHCP Clients Across Router from DHCP Server Cannot Obtain an Address from the Server

A DHCP server can provide IP addresses to client computers spanning multiple subnets if the router that separates them can act as an RFC 1542 (BOOTP) relay agent.

Using a network sniffer to gather network traces from the client and server at the time of the failure. Using this data, you may be able to identify additional causes for failure, including the following:

  • Network communication problems
  • DHCP relay agents
  • Firewall devices
  • Load balancer devices

The following diagram can be used to help understand the flow of expected behavior.
