For the last couple of days Devtrack and Devtest Web have become unresponsive after the following information event appears in the system event log:

For compatibility with previous versions of IIS, the filter ‘C:\WINNT\system32\DocFilter.dll’ was loaded as a global filter from the registry. To control the filter with the Internet Service Manager, remove the filter from the registry and add it as a global filter with Internet Service Manager. Filters in the registry are stored at “HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3Svc\Parameters\Filter DLLs”.

Both Devtrack and Devtest Web are hosted on the same Windows 2000 server running IIS 5. I have confirmed that while the problem is in state both Devtrack and Devtest are affected which to me points a IIS issue. This ISAPI filter docfilter.dll is only defined in the Devtrack web properties. From what I understand docfilter.dll is used to view Devtrack attachments. Some how the system tried to load the file based on the path in registry and failed.

A temporary workaround to resolve the issue is to reload the docfilter.dll within the Internet Services Manager and restart IIS. However, I have not been able to identify why the issue has suddenly surfaced as no deliberate changes have occured on the system.

The last thing I did was to backup and delete the regsitry key “HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3Svc\Parameters\Filter DLLs” it is now a wait and see game….IISIIS
