How do I Delete Windows XP Recycle Bin Hidden Files?

By Default in Windows XP, the recycle bin files are stored in a hidden folder c:\Recycler. To view the hidden folder:

  1. Open Windows Explorer
  2. Select Tools -> Folder Options -> Check “Show Hidden Files and Folders” + Uncheck “Hide protected operating system files”

Once the above steps have been completed you should be able to see the c:\recycler folder. When you open this folder you may see several sub-folders starting with the name C:\recycler\S-1-5-21******. Each folder represents the recycle bin for a local user.

On occassion you may find that although you have determined that there are deleted files with in one or more of the C:\recycler\S-1-5-21**** folders these files maybe hidden or inaccessible. This can be a serious issue if the system is running out of disk space.

To access and delete these files try the following steps:

  1. Open a CMD prompt and navigate to c:\recycler
  2. Change directory to your target recycle bin C:\recycler\S-1-5-21******
  3. Type dir /A to display all hidden files
  4. Delete any unwanted files with the del command
