Event ID: 7023 - A Duplicate Name Exists on the Network (Split Registration Behavior)

The error message “Event ID: 7023 A Duplicate Name Exists on the Network” is typically caused when one of the following occurs:

  1. A multihomed computer has the WINS Client [TCP/IP] protocol or the NetBEUI protocol enabled on both network adapters.
  2. Multiple Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) servers are present in the network environment, but replication between them is not configured.
  3. WINS clients are registering with more than one WINS server.

When you have a WINS issue, check the WINS tab of the TCP/IP Advanced Properties of the problem client/server. Verify that WINS servers are only pointing to itself and not to a partner for WINS registration. If the system is split registered, this will lead to WINS database corruption and several name resolution errors.
